Tapo is TP-Link’s line of home Wi-Fi cameras: five minutes to set up, controlled from an app, recording to a memory card. There are a lot of models, and they differ less in “quality” than in purpose. Here is how C200, C210, C220, C225, C500 and C520WS compare, and which one fits your situation.
Answer three questions first
- Indoors or outdoors? Outdoor placement needs an IP65/IP66 rating.
- Do you need pan and tilt? A moving camera covers a whole room; a fixed one sees a single sector.
- Do you need colour at night? Standard night vision is black and white; colour requires a model with a spotlight.

Which one for which job
Keeping an eye on a child or a pet
Tapo C200 or C210. Full 360° pan, two-way audio, motion alerts. Choose C210 if you want to make out details — 2K is clearly sharper than 1080p.
Home security while you are out
Tapo C220 or C225. They tell a person apart from a pet or a moving curtain, so you do not get buried in notifications. The C225 adds a physical shutter: when you are home the lens is covered — useful if the camera sits in the living room.
Yard, entrance, parking
Tapo C500 for the basic job, or C520WS when detail and colour night footage matter. Its spotlight and siren also work as a deterrent.
Worth knowing before you buy
- Memory card. Almost all models record to microSD — plan for 64–128 GB. Cloud storage is optional.
- Power. Tapo cameras run from an adapter, not a battery. For outdoor installs, plan the socket in advance.
- Wi-Fi. Cameras connect on 2.4 GHz. If the camera sits far from the router you may need an extender or mesh.

No. Live view, card recording and alerts all work without one.
Can I watch from another country?
Yes, through the Tapo app, as long as the camera has internet.
How many cameras can I run?
The practical limit is Wi-Fi capacity. For 3–4 cameras in a flat, make sure the router copes — if not, consider a newer router.
